Such as one day has twenty four hours. I hours has sixty minutes and so on. Similarly weight has units such as pounds, kilograms and so on. Volume has units such as gallons, liters and so on. Length has units such as meters, centimeter and so on. Example 1: Divide 20 pounds and 16 ounces by 4? Solution: Given (20 pounds and 16 ounces) 4. Here divide both the pounds and ounces by 4. Even if you feel comfortable reading and writing it, speaking it can be nerve-wracking! Check out these tips from tutor Emmanuel N.  to learn how to pronounce Spanish words quickly and efficiently As youre learning Spanish, you may notice that reading it and writing it is often the easy part. Many people agree that speaking Spanish is the hard part. Wondering why that is? Usually it’s because learning how to pronounce Spanish words takes time. We’ve all heard the stereotypical American way of speaking Spanish, in which the language is utterly butchered: Fortunately, most Spanish learners do not speak this way. However, some Spanish learners still have trouble getting the accent and pronunciation correct. This is one reason why you might not like talking in Spanish â€" you might feel embarrassed. With that said, allow me to help you, my Spanish learners. Common Problems For Spanish Learners In my experience, most Spanish learners have difficulty with the different sounds that Spanish words ask of them. Below are the most common problems: 1) Putting emphasis on the wrong syllable on a word with an accent mark, e.g. “obstáculo,” which means “obstacle.” People can sometimes mispronounce it like this: when the correct way is this: 2) Not putting enough force on the beginning of a word, e.g.  â€œel gato” which means “the cat.” People sometimes say the word like this: when it really should be said like this: 3) Failing to pronounce words with “r’s” and “rr’s” correctly, e.g.  â€œes caro” and “el carro, which means “it’s cheap” and “the car” respectively. People sometimes pronounce both words like this: or both words like this: When the correct way is this: Spanish relies heavily on pronunciation, so if you don’t pronounce words correctly, it becomes extremely difficult for others to understand you! Thats why I recommend trying to mimic the sounds that Spanish speakers make as you learn. I, for one, never spoke Spanish despite knowing it growing up. I never had the accent Latinos had because I spoke only English for school. But then I practiced for years with my family, cousins, and friends, and though I do not have the perfect Latino accent, I am able to pronounce words correctly and be understood by anyone. Tips For How to Pronounce Spanish Words Remembering how to pronounce Spanish words can be tricky if you’re not Latino or if you didn’t grow up in a household where people spoke Spanish on a daily basis. If you were never exposed to the accent and the proper way of speaking the language, then you naturally use your natural tongue (i.e. your own accent from your language) to speak Spanish â€" hence the Spanish we all know of when we think of a stereotypical American trying to speak it. Here are some tips for learning to speak Spanish properly: Watch TV shows and movies either in Spanish or translate them in Spanish (i.e. SAP). By listening to Spanish speakers, youll hear how the words are meant to be spoken. Keep in mind, though, that dialects do exist in all Spanish-speaking countries, so the words might sound different depending on what show or movie you’re watching. Listen to and sing along to Spanish songs. Some Spanish songs have words that are sung slower than they are normally spoken, thus making it easier for Spanish learners to hear how they are pronounced. Singing along helps more than just listening because you are practicing the words and sounding (singing) them out like the singer. Ask your Spanish-speaking friends to help you. Ask them to have conversations with you. Ask them to read Spanish words and sentences out loud for you, slowly if need be. Read on as she explains the benefits, and how online lessons can work for you! Two Crucial Benefits of Online Lessons I’ve been teaching online voice lessons via Skype and FaceTime for a year now. Before I started, I had the same questions anyone else would have: How does this work? Will my students get as much out of these lessons as they do at in-person lessons? I’m here to tell you that online lessons work beautifully and absolutely YES students get every bit as much out of online lessons that they do traditional lessons…if not even more! First of all, let’s talk convenience. We’re all super busy these days. Always on the go, and somewhat overscheduled! With online voice lessons, my students are able to sing with me anywhere there is a good Internet connection, including hotel rooms when they are traveling. Even if my student is more local, sometimes they just don’t feel like dealing with traffic, parking, weather, or even leaving their comfortable pajamas.  And I don’t have to worry about making sure my bathroom is sparkling clean! Online voice lessons have allowed me to teach students from all over the world.  Internationally, I’ve taught students in India, Italy, Mexico, and the Philippines.  I’m in the Bay Area of California, but my time zone has allowed me to teach lessons to students all over the United States as well, including as far away as Maryland, Texas, and Illinois. With the improvements that have been made in the quality of Skype and FaceTime and other platforms, it really does feel like you are in the same room together. I am able to detect tension, strain, breathiness, etc. every bit as effectively as I am with students taking in-person singing lessons. If a student is using an especially high-quality microphone, I can detect even more issues that need to be addressed. Technology is really something! What Do I Need for Online Voice Lessons? In addition to a reliable Internet connection and a microphone, all you need is a Skype or FaceTime account, depending on what your teacher uses). Skype is completely free. Lately, more and more teachers have been using Google Helpouts, as well (also free). When its time to sing, the student is the one who brings up the mp3 or YouTube video to sing along with on their end, as this is the way to avoid lag and both parties can hear it more effectively this way. There are so many other bells and whistles I am excited to try out. Screen sharing, for one.  And who knows what other improvements will be made in the near future, or what other platforms will be introduced that allow music instructors to reach out to students from all over? Which Is Right for Me?   There really is no right or wrong as to which medium a student chooses for their voice lessons. It’s entirely a matter of personal preference.  Some really value the personal feel of in-person lessons, but I can’t stress enough how it really does feel like both student and teacher are right there together. My online students have had the opportunity to meet my teaching assistants (my sassy cats!), too . And I get to meet more of their family (human and four-legged) when lessons are online. Teaching a Growth Mindset Principles to Your Child In my last post I discussed the powerful impact that having a Growth Mindset can have on motivation and academic achievement. With a Growth Mindset you believe that through effort and the use of solid strategies you can become smarter and better at just about anything you put your mind to. And in fact, theres a great deal of neuroscience research supporting the notion that we can in fact grow our brains and become smarter! Unfortunately kids with ADHD may be more likely to have a Fixed Mindset. Their struggles with motivation and academics may have lead them down the path of believing that their hard work doesnt really pay off, and there is nothing they can do to become smarter or better at the things that are challenging for them. And with this set of beliefs, mustering up the motivation to work hard at school or tackle challenging homework problems is extremely difficult. Fortunately, research has shown that mindsets can be changed and that includes your child with ADHD. Parents and teachers can foster Growth Mindsets in their children and have a big impact on their motivation and achievement. So, how do you go about encouraging a Growth Mindset? It takes two phases. First, teach your child a few core Growth Mindset principles. Then on a daily basis, emphasize Growth Mindset thoughts and actions to cement the new Growth Mindset lessons and encourage increased motivation over time. So lets start with Phase I: teaching three core Growth Mindset principles. We can grow our brains. Explain to your child that the brain is like a muscle. When we lift weights our muscles get stronger and they grow. The same thing happens when we exercise our brain. The more we challenge our brain the more it grows, and the more we grow our brain the better we become at things like math, reading, writing, and even fun things like videogames and sports. (Videogames may make the most sense to some kids: Remember when you got that new game and didnt know how to get past Level I, but then you kept playing and learning and you were able to not only get past Level I but get all the way to Level 4. And now youre still playing and learning and soon youll be at Level 5? Thats because you were exercising your brain and challenging it to grow.) There are some excellent videos online that teach kids about how they can grow their brain. For younger kids I recommend the Class Dojo Growth Mindset series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zrtHt3bBmQ and for older kids I recom mend the Khan Academy Growing your Mind video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtKJrB5rOKs. How our brains grow. In order to straighten our muscles, we challenge them through exercise. If we keep lifting the same light weight over and over again, then our muscles wont really get stronger. We need to challenge them by gradually adding heavier weights. With our brains, we exercise them by doing challenging work. By trying things that may seem hard, and by making and correcting mistakes. Mistakes can actually be good things, because when we correct our mistakes our brain gets stronger! (Lets go back to our videogame example: When you first started Level 2, you struggled to defeat the monster. He won a lot of the time. But you kept hitting the reset button and challenging yourself to find a way to get around the monster. Each time you failed to beat him, you learned a little bit more about what might work next time.) We need good tools and strategies. Your child has certainly tried to do challenging work in the past. But if your child has ADHD, theres a good chance that there have been quite a few times when he or she were not able to succeed at the level that was expected of him or her. These failures may have made your child hesitant to take on new challenges, even if he or she knows that challenging work is good for him or her. So, make sure to let your child know that in addition to challenging work, they need strategies that will help them succeed. Tell your child that you recognize that he or she may not have had the tools and strategies that he or she needed in the past. But youre going to do everything you can to help him or her learn different strategies and tools so that he or she can succeed now. And with your childs hard work, combined with new strategies and tools, the sky is the limit! (And one last time well revisit the videogame example: And then when you reached Level 4, you real ly struggled with the dragon. But it was your babysitter Mark who gave you a great idea for a strategy to try and it worked! Sometimes we need some coaching and help just to give us a little help in what direction to go in or what we might want to try. Mark didnt give you the answers, but he gave you a strategy. And having that strategy helped you beat that Level. Sometimes life is like the videogame where we just need someone to give us a new strategy or a tool to help us do our work and then we can see the way forward.) In addition to teaching your child these key Growth Mindset principles, get started on figuring out ways to help your child learn new strategies for the things that are hard for him or her. Talk to your childs teacher about subjects that are difficult. Find out which learning tools are currently working for your child and which tools are not. Kids with ADHD may need different learning strategies, so ask about alternate tools and strategies that they can try. Consider getting extra help for your child through their school or through a learning center or tutoring program (see my previous post on choosing a good tutoring center for your child). Remember that your childs hard work will only lead to improvement when he or she is putting their effort into using the tools and strategies that work for him or her. First Tutors new data reveals the national average cost for Private Tuition Private tuition is much cheaper than many families suspect, with the national average costing less than 23.00 per hour -- meaning expert help for your child's education is more affordable than you think. Still, there are strong regional variations with Kensington the most expensive area and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne the cheapest place in the country. 20/03/13, London. Families across the nation paid an average of 22.31 per hour for private tuition in the last year. Taken from price data provided by over 15,000 tutors, FirstTutors.com found that families in rural areas are paying on average slightly more than those in major cities (the city average stands at 21.55 while the rural average is 23.07). This can be largely attributed to both higher travel costs and lower competition in rural areas. Equally, tuition costs reflect educational complexity, with the national average ranging from 20.10 for primary and secondary school tuition, to 26.56 for university level tuition. With the UK still in the grip of an economic slump, yet decent university degrees increasingly necessary for anyone wishing to enter the countrys fiercely competitive job market, private tuition is a rapidly growing sector with as much as a quarter of 11-16 year olds benefitting from it some form1, as families do all they can to better their childrens prospects.
